Maria Starzmann

Maria Theresia ("Maresi") Starzmann is a research associate with the Reshaping Prosecution program. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Binghamton University and brings expertise in qualitative research with a focus on post- and decolonial methodologies. At Vera, her work revolves around collaborative and participatory action research to better understand local communities’ perceptions of the US justice system and map pathways toward increasing transparency in prosecution, advancing racial equity, and ending mass incarceration. Prior to joining Vera in 2020, Maresi worked as a project manager in the New York office of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, where she implemented public programming on women’s rights, climate justice, and monitoring far-right extremism. She was previously Assistant Professor at McGill University in Montreal and Free University in Berlin, where her research and teaching focused on cultural heritage, war and imperialism, memory, and historical justice.
