Who you are
The Research Associate contributes to a growing body of work under Vera’s Greater Justice New York (GJNY) program. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, passionate about social justice, and drawn to working collaboratively with colleagues at Vera and our partners in the field. They will be someone who innately understands the power of research to tell a compelling story about the criminal legal system and identify opportunities for reform. The work calls for a strong grasp of qualitative research methods including but not limited to observations, interviews, and participatory action research, and the ability to build and maintain research engagement with local communities.
In this role, you will:
Work collaboratively with GJNY staff to lead and conduct a range of qualitative research projects on bail, jail and prison incarceration, parole, sentencing, and policy reforms in New York.
Design and conduct qualitative studies using different qualitative research methods including surveys, observations, focus groups, interviews, content analysis, and participatory action research.
Develop and manage research engagements with local criminal system agencies, community members, and people who are directly impacted by the criminal legal system.
Write a range of documents for stakeholders, advocates, and the public, including research reports, policy/research briefs, and proposals.
Assist in the development of new research projects and research design that address GJNY’s areas of strategic focus and that advance our research agenda.
Recruit, supervise, and mentor additional research staff to support this work; and assist in other GJNY projects and tasks.
What qualifications do you need?
Required:
- Bachelors degree + 3-5 years of relevant experience in social science, including but not limited to sociology, criminal justice, history, criminology, or public policy; or relevant work or academic history and lived experience as a person with justice system involvement
- In lieu of a Bachelors degree, applicable work or life
- Leadership and expertise in qualitative research with interviews, focus group, participatory action research, content analysis including formulating research questions, cleaning and analyzing data, and creating data visualizations
- Excellent writing skills; Ability to be flexible, multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple activities in a fast-paced environment
- Interest in working with program and research staff in Vera’s strongly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse array of people and positions, including advocates, government officials, criminal justice system personnel, practitioners, and people who are directly impacted by the criminal system
Preferred:
- Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant work experience
- Lived experience as a person with justice system involvement
Compensation and Benefits:
The compensation range for this position is $69,900 - $71,9000 (Level D). Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to experience and performance. The salary range listed is just one component of Vera Institute’s total compensation package for employees.
